thanks, i did a night sortie once but could not really take photos, but the view was amazing at night all the same. We were breifed that no one could take pictures using a flash, for obvious reasons. Some idiot decided to say "well the other pilot has plenty of distance to recover". the officer briefing us repliyed "yes that is true but remember hes only 20 feet away from our plane!" lol

laying in the back of a KC-135R, a refueling/cargo military version of a Boeing 707.
I was at about 29,000ft there.

i took the photo, but was not operating the Boom at the time. Although i did get to play on the Boom a little when the F-16 was not there ;)

I don't think I've ever had a camera handy when I've been stowed away in a refueling plane's cargo hold! How did you get that opportunity?

ha, id hardly say it was stowing away in a cargo hold, its purpose built for this. I have friends in high places that managed to get me up, i have been on a night sortie too, its just an amazing view.

Every time I see images of a mid-air refueling, I am impressed at the entire operation, from the skill of the pilots to the steadiness of the airmen that guide the tanker from the rear of the aircraft while the transfer is taking place. This image certainly proves that it takes nerves of steel to complete this operation. Wonderful capture, Buzz.
